Here’s How to Throw a Gold-Medal Olympic Viewing Party

Brazilian snacks, competitive games, and plenty of caipirinhas are essential for this Olympic party

Paper cones filled with popcorn are a great edible replica of the Olympic torch.

The 2016 Olympic Games will begin Aug. 5, and though there’s been much dispute about whether Brazil is ready to host the event, we’re definitely ready to spend our summer days curled up on the couch, sipping on caipirinhas, watching world-class athletes compete to win medals. Olympic viewing is always done best with friends, so invite them over, set up a mini Olympic Games in your backyard, cook some tasty Brazilian snacks, shake up some cocktails, gift everyone an edible Olympic medal, and enjoy watching the incredible speed and talent of the world’s best athletes.

Here’s How to Throw a Gold-Medal Olympic Viewing Party (Slideshow)

An Olympic viewing party obviously needs Olympic-themed decorations. Make some Olympic ring paper chains and hang them up around your home, gift your guests an Olympic crown, and transform your snacks into mini Olympic torches. Set a costume theme for your party — we love the idea of everyone dressing up as his or her favorite athlete — host mini, but competitive, Olympic races in your backyard, and create a medal podium photo booth to make your friends feel like they really are part of the Games.

Use the food and drinks as an easy way to transport your guests to Rio. Ice-cold cachaça-based cocktails are essential, and the tastiest Brazilian food isn’t difficult to prepare and is perfect for a party. Bar snacks, such as cod fritters, are the perfect accompaniment to all those drinks, and make sure you follow them with Brazilian style barbecue and pizza. Don’t forget to serve sweet truffles at the end of the meal: No Brazilian party is ever complete without them.

When your house is decorated, there are plenty of salty and sweet snacks ready to eat, and the drinks are perfectly chilled, it’s time to turn the television on and get this Olympic viewing party started.

Host an Olympic Games Home Viewing Party!

You might have seen my mini gold medal cakes earlier this week, and now I’m back to share another gold medal moment and some Olympic Games viewing party inspiration. Coca-Cola, a worldwide sponsor of the Olympic Movement for more than 80 years, is helping us recognize and shine a light on our own gold medal moments. Whether it’s something small you’re celebrating or a major accomplishment, it’s your #ThatsGold moment! Are you ready for another gold medal moment of mine?

As the resident hostess around here, you might imagine I host grand “Pinterest-worthy” parties every single day, but you’d be wrong. I do love to entertain, obviously, but we just moved into a new house several months ago. I’ve been knee deep in paint swatches and boxes, so I haven’t had a chance to really “entertain” with my friends in the new house. Until now! It might seem silly, but it’s a major achievement to finally have a little party!

With the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in full swing, it’s the perfect opportunity to invite friends over and watch the Olympics. So that is exactly what I did! Anyone else obsessed with gymnastics?! It’s my fave to watch, especially the floor routine. So anyway, it may not sound like a big deal but it’s a gold medal moment that I’m actually entertaining in the new house. There is still a lot to be done but it can wait, it’s time to have fun! So I’m sharing my little viewing party pics with you…and more details on the #ThatsGold campaign!

If you want to set up your own Olympic Games home viewing party, here are a few little tips and tricks:

  • Flags! Whether they’re little flag food picks, a banner, or paper to line your table, flags must make an appearance! You can obviously stick to your favorite country’s flag, but I included lots.
  • Napkins in the official colors – Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Black! I also added in straws in these colors as well.
  • Food & Drinks! I opted for a few international faves like French profiteroles and Italian Caprese salad! Also making an appearance were my mini gold medal cakes, they’re the perfect sweet finish. Popcorn is a must at any of my viewing parties, so of course it was served up as well. As for drinks, including the Olympic Movement’s longest continuous sponsor, Coca-Cola is a no-brainer (with their cute Olympic themed cans).
  • Set your food up on a variety of little cake stands for visual interest and easy grabbing!

There you have it! I love using a bar cart because it’s easy to roll right in to the TV room, but you could use a small sideboard table or even a coffee table! The point is getting together with friends to enjoy each other and great food. #ThatsGold!

#ThatsGold!

If you missed the memo on my other post here, then don’t forget you have one more day to get in your entries to win one of these glitzy gold Coca-Cola bottles! Full details below…
